Adam and I attended Brighton SEO on Friday, a first for both of us. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect as I'd heard so many great things from people over the years. It's got to be said that @kelvinnewman has done a remarkable job in getting this event to where it is and I believe they’re even thinking about moving to a bigger venue soon.
Not a jacket or umbrella in sight as it promised to be a bright sunny day. A bit of networking, a few talks and maybe an ice cream on the beach. The weather was absolutely shocking so we were forced indoors, which, as it happened wasn't such a bad thing.
As we arrived we were greeted by a friendly but, obviously hungover student who sorted our passes and moved us on our way. We circled the room like a couple of hyenas in the search of thought leaders and plenty of coffee.
Although the size of the exhibitors was small compared to other events, we did find a group of enthusiastic exhibitors who were clearly loving what they do. We had a great chat with the guys at The Hoth, who had travelled over from Miami to exhibit and we look forward to chatting again soon.
If I were to pick at something it would be the overall lack of exhibitors. I wasn’t expecting Vegas but it would have been good to chat to more people and agencies.
But on to the talks.
Our first talk was by @aleyda who talked about how to drive growth through your SEO Audit. It’s clear to see why Business Insider see her as one of the 50 Online Marketing Influencers to Watch in 2016.
It was a really engaging talk, even though some of it was over my head it has certainly got me thinking and I’m keen to learn more! She was kind enough to tweet her deck and it’s well worth a look.
We then had a session with @philnottingham who discussed, amongst other things, the importance of correct naming for YouTube videos and the best use of thumbnails. Take a look at Jamie Oliver’s Drinks Tube for how to do this. He sells his videos like movie posters and it shows in his formulaic, but engaging posts. He's also tweeted his deck
Perhaps our favourite talk of the day was by @ who chatted about becoming a FB ad superhero. Greg is the Director of Search and Social at DealerOn, a software company that provides websites and online marketing to new car dealers all over the US. It was sweary, engaging, visual and funny. He's certainly gained a new admirer from us at BBI. His slides are here but don't worry, not a single kitten was harmed in the making of this deck!
So the time came for us to say goodbye, but not before leaving any thought of digital life behind and getting involved with some good old fashioned tea towel tie dying. It will make a great addition to the office kitchen.
All in all, it was a great day, we met some good people and listened to some really engaging talks.
